Caterpillar Reports 35% Surge in Construction Equipment Revenue as Heavy Equipment Demand Soars
Caterpillar has reported strong growth in its construction equipment business during the second quarter of 2026, highlighting continued demand for heavy machinery across construction, infrastructure, mining and other capital-intensive industries.
The company’s Construction Industries segment generated approximately $8.35 billion in sales, representing a 35% year-on-year increase compared with the second quarter of 2025. The growth was primarily supported by higher equipment sales to end users and favorable pricing.
The strong performance reflects continued demand for heavy construction machinery as contractors and businesses invest in infrastructure development, commercial construction, earthmoving and large-scale projects.
Caterpillar also reported approximately $9.4 billion in new orders during the quarter. Its order backlog reached around $72.1 billion, providing the company with significant visibility into future equipment deliveries.
The North American market remained particularly strong, with higher equipment demand contributing significantly to the company’s Construction Industries performance. Growth was also recorded across other major regions, demonstrating continued activity in the global construction equipment market.
Caterpillar’s Construction Industries segment profit increased substantially during the quarter, reaching approximately $1.95 billion, up about 57% from the same period last year. Higher sales volumes were a key contributor to the improvement.
The company’s overall financial performance was also notable. Caterpillar reported approximately $20.5 billion in total sales and revenue for the second quarter, representing growth of around 24% compared with the previous year.
Strong Demand for Heavy Construction Equipment
Caterpillar’s results are significant for the wider heavy equipment industry. Higher equipment sales indicate continued demand for machines used in excavation, earthmoving, road construction, material handling and site development.
Equipment categories benefiting from this environment include:
- •Excavators
- •Backhoe loaders
- •Wheel loaders
- •Bulldozers
- •Motor graders
- •Articulated dump trucks
- •Compactors and rollers
- •Mining equipment
- •Quarry equipment
- •Road construction machinery
The strength of Caterpillar’s order backlog also suggests that equipment demand is extending beyond short-term purchasing cycles.
Mining and Quarry Equipment Also See Growth
Caterpillar’s Resource Industries segment, which serves mining, heavy construction and quarry and aggregates applications, also delivered strong results.
The segment generated approximately $4.65 billion in sales, representing a 20% increase compared with the second quarter of 2025.
Higher equipment sales to end users were an important factor behind this growth, reinforcing demand for large machinery used in mining, quarrying and heavy civil construction.
Data Centres Add Another Source of Equipment Demand
Another emerging factor supporting Caterpillar’s business is the rapid expansion of data-centre infrastructure.
Although data centres are technology facilities, their development requires extensive site preparation, excavation, foundations, concrete work, electrical infrastructure and power-generation capacity. This creates additional demand for construction machinery and heavy equipment.
Caterpillar’s Power & Energy segment also benefited from this trend, with sales increasing during the quarter as demand for power-generation equipment remained strong.
Positive Signal for the Heavy Equipment Market
Caterpillar’s latest results provide an important indicator for manufacturers, dealers, rental companies and contractors operating in the heavy construction equipment market.
A 35% increase in Construction Industries sales, combined with $9.4 billion in new orders and a $72.1 billion backlog, points to strong equipment demand going into the second half of 2026.
For equipment rental companies and dealers, stronger demand could support higher machine utilisation and continued interest in both new and used equipment. Contractors may also continue expanding or upgrading fleets to meet project requirements.
The broader market is being supported by multiple sectors, including infrastructure development, heavy civil construction, mining, quarrying, commercial construction and data-centre development.
Caterpillar’s performance therefore represents more than one manufacturer’s quarterly results. It provides a broader indication that demand for heavy construction and earthmoving equipment remains robust across key global markets.
With large infrastructure projects continuing and investment in construction and industrial development remaining strong, the heavy equipment sector enters the second half of 2026 with considerable momentum.
