The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has officially announced new deadlines for the completion of two key infrastructure projects in Mumbai – the Sion and Belasis flyovers. These flyovers, which span crucial railway lines, are expected to significantly improve east-west connectivity and reduce traffic bottlenecks in central Mumbai.
Sion Flyover Project – Completion by May 31, 2026 The Sion flyover, which connects the eastern and western parts of the city, is scheduled for completion by May 31, 2026. The southern side foot overbridge (FOB), constructed by the Railways, is expected to be completed by August 31, 2025. Following this, major works like girder installation will begin — north side in November 2025 and south side in January 2026. The western approach road via LBS Marg is nearly complete, while the second underpass work will begin on October 1, 2025. All railway-related components are set to be wrapped up by May 15, 2026.
Belasis Flyover Project – Fast-tracked to December 15, 2025 Initially expected to complete in April 2026, the Belasis flyover is now on a fast-track schedule, with a new deadline of December 15, 2025. It connects Tardeo and Nagpada areas to Mumbai Central station and spans the railway line between Mumbai Central and Grant Road. As part of the project, 13 obstructing structures have been cleared. The installation of 12 girders (each 36 metres long) is targeted for completion by August 10, 2025.
Coordinated Efforts for Timely Completion A progress review meeting held on June 24 at BMC HQ, attended by key BMC and railway officials, focused on ensuring smooth coordination and timely execution of both flyover projects that promise to decongest traffic and enhance urban mobility in Mumbai.
