Govt. Plans 20-km Road Over Munak Canal

In a significant move to decongest city traffic and improve public transport infrastructure, the Delhi government has proposed the development of a 20-kilometre-long elevated road over the Munak Canal. The project is estimated to cost ₹3,000 crore (Rs 30 billion), aiming to provide a faster, more streamlined route for commuters travelling across the city.

The elevated stretch will serve as a critical corridor connecting key parts of Delhi, offering an alternative to existing congested roads. By constructing this elevated roadway over the Munak Canal, the government plans to utilise the available canal corridor without requiring extensive land acquisition—making it both cost-effective and efficient in terms of project execution.

This initiative is part of Delhi’s larger push towards improving transportation infrastructure and easing urban mobility challenges. With the city experiencing increasing vehicular pressure and rapid urban growth, the need for alternative high-speed travel corridors has become more pressing than ever.

The proposed elevated road is expected to reduce travel time, ease congestion on nearby arterial roads, and improve the daily commute for thousands of residents. It will also contribute to reduced vehicular pollution by decreasing idle time on the roads.

This project aligns with the government’s broader strategy to enhance last-mile connectivity and integrate transport modes across the city. Once approved and implemented, the elevated road over the Munak Canal could emerge as a model for sustainable and strategic urban transport planning.
