Surat Builds Smarter: A New Parallel Road to Ease Dumas Traffic

Surat: In a major infrastructure boost for the city, a new parallel road connecting Sachin Magdalla Road to the Silent Zone near Dumas was officially inaugurated on Friday. Developed at a cost of ₹21 crore, the project also includes street lighting and a stormwater drainage network, aimed at improving the travel experience and reducing congestion on the existing Surat-Dumas Road.

The newly constructed asphalt road spans nearly 5 kilometers and runs along both sides of a canal. It has been strategically developed to serve as an alternate route to the busy Dumas Road — a popular weekend stretch often choked with traffic due to high tourist footfall at Dumas beach and surrounding areas. The new road is expected to significantly reduce traffic jams, especially during weekends and holidays.

This new route not only benefits tourists heading toward the beach and airport, but also improves overall connectivity for residents in nearby areas. The road is 36 meters wide, including 6-meter-wide service roads on both sides to accommodate local traffic and service vehicles.

Previously, a road existed along this route but had become heavily damaged and unsafe for smaller vehicles due to years of poor maintenance. While heavy vehicles traveling to and from Magdalla Port continued to use it, other commuters had largely abandoned it. With the redevelopment now complete, over one lakh residents from areas including Dumas village, Kadifaliya, Sultanabad, and Gaviyer are expected to benefit from smoother access to the airport and the ongoing Dumas sea face development.

At the inauguration ceremony, Minister of State for Home, Harsh Sanghavi, emphasized the importance of the project in enhancing travel convenience. “Dumas beach is one of Surat’s most popular recreational spots, but it often sees long traffic jams during weekends. This new road provides an alternate route and ensures people can enjoy their outings without the stress of congestion,” he said. He also appealed to the public to contribute toward maintaining cleanliness at tourist destinations to attract more visitors and improve the city's image.

Surat Mayor Daxesh Mavani highlighted the city's achievements, stating that Surat has received seven national awards for excellence in governance, cleanliness, and infrastructure development. “This project is another step in our mission to build a better and more connected Surat,” he said.

Local MLA Sandeep Desai echoed these sentiments, noting that the government is actively investing in the development of the Dumas coastline to promote tourism and regional growth.

With this new road now operational, Surat residents and visitors can look forward to a smoother, more scenic, and efficient travel experience to one of the city’s favorite beach destinations. The project underscores the city’s commitment to modernizing its infrastructure and improving quality of life for its citizens.
