In a major infrastructure push for Bengaluru, the Karnataka state cabinet has approved a global tender for the ambitious North-South Corridor tunnel road project. The project, estimated to cost ₹17,780 crore, will be executed under the Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) model, where a private agency will construct and operate the road for a period of 30 years.
Law Minister HK Patil announced that the cabinet has finalized the BOOT model to fast-track the construction and ensure long-term maintenance and efficiency. The project involves drilling a 33.49-kilometre twin tunnel road from Esteem Mall at Hebbal Junction to HSR Layout via Silk Board Junction, forming a crucial underground corridor for decongesting Bengaluru's overburdened roads.
As per the proposed plan, the tunnel drilling is expected to be completed within 26 months, followed by 12 months of construction work. Once completed, this tunnel road will significantly reduce traffic congestion in the city by offering a dedicated high-speed underground route between key urban points.
The state government has also indicated that toll collection is likely, as the private operator will manage and operate the infrastructure for three decades. The toll charges will be finalized later in consultation with the selected agency.
This tunnel road is expected to transform urban mobility in Bengaluru, reducing travel time, lowering vehicle emissions, and contributing to the state’s long-term urban development goals. With a global tender opening the project to international expertise and technology, the initiative signals the government’s commitment to creating world-class transport infrastructure for India’s tech capital.
