The Pune Metro project is set to take a major leap forward with the addition of 12 new metro trains, valued at ₹430.53 crore. These new train sets are essential for supporting the growing network of Pune Metro, particularly the extension from PCMC to Nigdi and Swargate to Katraj.
As part of the ongoing efforts to expand the metro network, the construction of the PCMC-Nigdi stretch is progressing at a rapid pace, while the tender process for the Swargate-Katraj corridor is expected to be finalized soon. To meet the transportation needs of these new routes, Pune Metro has placed an order for 12 new train sets with Titagarh Rail Systems Limited and Titagarh Firema.
In line with the Government of India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, these new train sets will be fully manufactured domestically, ensuring a significant boost to local manufacturing. Each train set will consist of three coaches and will be constructed using lightweight aluminium, a material that is already in use for the existing rakes.
This procurement is part of the ongoing modernization and expansion efforts of Pune Metro, designed to enhance the commuter experience and meet the growing demand for sustainable public transport in the city. The total cost for the 12 new train sets amounts to ₹430.53 crore, and the delivery of these trains is expected to occur in phases over the next 30 months.
With these new additions, Pune Metro will be well-equipped to handle the rising traffic on its expanded routes, supporting the city’s move towards a more efficient and eco-friendly urban transport system.
